Technological optimism seems to be doing what macroeconomic policy could not: change foreign investors’ minds about China. Last September, the China’s government promised a shift to stronger countercyclical policies to get out of a deflationary spiral, but since then execution has been somewhat inconsistent and market confidence is lacking. Some green shoots of economic recovery have emerged, with consumer spending picking up recently. But the nascent rebound in the property market is at risk of stalling out amid a policy vacuum. And signals of greater comity between US President Donald Trump and China’s top leader Xi Jinping have not prevented the escalation of US tariffs on China. Amid all this noise, Chinese companies’ demonstration of real technological advancements in artificial intelligence and electric vehicles has captured imagination of investors.
