With India’s next national election due in the second quarter of 2024, the upcoming budget on February 1 will be firmly focused on winning votes. That means expansionary fiscal settings and a boost for infrastructure investment. This is positive for demand in the near-term, but with India’s public-debt-to-GDP ratio well above average for an emerging economy, the longer-term dynamics for the economy and financial markets may be less benign.
