   About GaveKal

GaveKal is a financial services firm that offers institutional investors and high net worth individuals three different services: fund management, independent research on global macro-economic trends and events, and independent advisory work on China and its impact on the global economy.

1- GaveKal Research – Independent Macro-Economic Research Geared Towards the Institutional Investor

The GaveKal Research product is built as an interaction between the GaveKal partners/analysts and our clients all around the world. Subscribing to GaveKal Research is thus an efficient way to stay in the path of challenging ideas and new concepts necessary in the ever-evolving investment environment.

Clients of GaveKal Research get to participate in seminars and conference calls with GaveKal partners, hold frequent meetings with partners in locations of their choice, contribute to our blog/discussion forum on this website, receive as many GaveKal free books as they wish, and access to our various reports. These reports are:

  • Quarterly Strategy Chart Books
Our Quarterly Strategy Chart Books are lengthy pieces -usually over 70 pages in which we review the investment environment for the coming months and the important structural changes affecting the financial markets. We aim to single out the asset classes that should benefit in the forthcoming environment. After the publication of the Quarterly Strategy Chart Books, the GaveKal partners go around the world and try to meet as many clients as possible.
  • Monthly Chart Reviews
At the beginning of each month, we review what we believe were the important changes in economic data, and the important trends emanating out of the equity markets, the bond markets, the currency markets and the commodity markets over the previous month.
  • Five Corners
In these seven pages, bi-monthly pieces, we attempt to review what we feel are the six most important developments of the previous two weeks and their potential market implications and our seventh page is a review of a book we found interesting.
  • Ad Hoc Comments
Our Ad-Hoc Comments tend to be "think pieces" where we review in depth a problem close to our hearts or mind. These pieces can be of different lengths (usually 3 to 15 pages). There is no regular publication schedule for Ad-Hoc comments but we publish approximately fifty a year, or one a week.
  • Checking the Boxes
Every day, we send our clients a review of what we believe to be the day's important events and how they affect our core investment scenario. We also review our core investment themes and whether they were impacted by events in the previous 24 hours. In this Daily publication, we also publish questions from clients, and review hanswers in a hope of fostering a debate with our broader client base.
  • Books
About once a year, one of the GaveKal partner will publish a book on a timely topic. These books are sent free of charge to clients.
  • Discussion Forum
We strive to update any and all of our recommendations through our discussion forum.

2- Fund Management

GaveKal's money management operations are divided along three axis:

  • Asian Funds. In July 2008, GaveKal teamed up with London-based hedge fund Marshall-Wace Asset Management Limited to launch MW GaveKal, a HK based joint-venture company which manages three long-only Asian multi-asset class funds. To find out more please visit www.mwgavekal.com.
  • A Global Long-Only Equity Fund. The GaveKal Platform Company Fund is a US$ denominated, Irish domiciled, long-only equity fund which aims to outperform the World MSCI by investing in companies evolving away from the vertically integrated business model to the "platform company" business model. This fund was launched in September 2006. To find out more, please click here.
  • The European Divergence Fund. In November 2007, GaveKal teamed up with Corriente Capital of Fort Worth, Texas as a co-advisor of a hedge fund whose purpose is to profit from the unfolding European credit crunch.

3- GaveKal-Dragonomics: A Research & Advisory Business Helping Investors Come to Grasp with the Underpinnings of China’s Impressive Growth

GaveKal-Dragonomics is an independent research and advisory firm specializing in China's economy and its influence on Asia and the world. We deliver our insights to financial institutions and corporate clients through research reports, data services, presentations, and face-to-face briefings. Our flagship publication, the China Economic Quarterly, is widely regarded as the most authoritative journal of China's economy and business environment.

China is the world's most dynamic emerging market and the hub of a regional Asian economy that is fast becoming the center of global manufacturing. It exercises a decisive impact on world markets and plays an increasingly important geopolitical role. As one of the world's largest recipients of crossborder capital flows China is also of growing significance in financial markets.

To understand any part of the world economy it is essential to understand China's influence. GaveKal-Dragonomics enables its clients to make sense of the internal dynamics of China's economy, politics and business environment. We then aim to help clients translate that knowledge into investment decisions in China, Asia and North American and European markets.
